about

I was happily commissioned to present a recorded score to Shakespeare Santa Cruz's 2010 season production of The Lion in Winter. Directed by Richard E.T. White. It was never heard, outside of the live run of the show, until now. My intention was to continue evolving my work as a performing composer using the cello as my kind of living foley sound box. So the majority of incidental sounds were literally made from my cello and/ or voice, various percussion & a shruti box. A cellar door slamming. A knife fight. A lion's roar. A phantom visit. The emotional interior Exposed: listen. Theater is Life. In the end, Everything is Theater. Expanding. Now. Past Present Future. Clicking us all Together. I am a theater kid; for Life. Thanks to my wonderful sound designer on this project, Gregory Scharpen, who totally got it & dialed us into the show 360. I am presenting so much of the work here as a peek into my process, as an interesting deep listening journey ride & also because if you want to commision me or use any of this for a project you're working on then please contact me directly:

"Bonfire Madigan Shive contributes a subtly propulsive minimalist musical score (to Shakespeare Santa Cruz's 2010 production of The Lion in Winter), particularly effective in her aching cello solos." — www.goodtimessantacruz.com/santa-cruz-arts-entertainment-lifestyles/live-events-music-theater-santa-cruz/1498-family-feudal.html

about

Bonfire Madigan San Diego, California

Bonfire Madigan, AKA Madigan Shive, is one of my favorite musicians of all time. She clutches her cello like a life-raft, singing in gorgeous yelps and hums. It doesn’t really matter if you like the kind of music Bonfire Madigan sings, because she does it so soulfully and gracefully, you can’t help but stand there open mouthed, gawking at her vocals and cello.— JS The Mercury Pdx, OR ... more
